France’s National Hunting and Fishing Agency said 70-year-old Pierre Green is in “serious” condition after an “accident” that left him in a coma. The hunter was shot while he was trying to do a cross-country “dessert” by himself. Green, a former soldier and one-time member of the military police who had worked as a captain in the armed forces, was hunting sika in the small French region of Coteaux-de-Gascogne.

“I don’t think he will survive,” his son Pierre Eiffel told the Times of London. “I think he is out of the woods and is critical.”

In a statement, investigators said they were working to determine what happened. “We are checking everything to establish the full details of what happened and to establish the circumstances of this fatal accident,” the agency said. The hunter, who has 15 grandchildren, was described as a very experienced hunter. “He had no history of hunting accidents and had no complaints with his bear,” his family said.
