“I don’t want the brothers to make a deathbed confession about what happened and how Natalie left,” Nathalie Wagner, the sister of actress Natalie Wood, told CNN. “I just think that this was an accident,” she said in an interview on the “New Day” program. “She tripped and fell and hit her head. It was an accident, and [Robert Wagner] should be treated as the innocent husband and pay his dues.” In the aftermath of Wood’s untimely death at 73, the investigation was re-opened in 2011. Wagner has always maintained his innocence, insisting he left Wood in the pool to sleep because she fell and her body had cold water in the pool that she didn’t know how to turn off.
Nathalie Wagner took issue with the reported timeline given to the Los Angeles Times by a local sheriff, who alleged that Wood was intoxicated prior to her drowning. She claimed that the family never heard from the actress on the night of her death, as Wagner, who was piloting the yacht, was still in bed, and that she would have picked her up to go to dinner. “I didn’t hear anything,” she said. “She was not intoxicated, nor was I asleep. So I don’t know what to think about [the report].”
Nathalie Wagner continued, “I can only offer that a man has a responsibility to take care of his wife and he didn’t. He didn’t take care of her. He’s, you know, what he did with the boat doesn’t change the fact that this was an accident,” she said. “We don’t know for sure if it was accidental or not, but I can tell you that there was no alcohol in the system. There was no drugs in the system.” She added, “I think everybody would agree that Natalie would not walk out of a pool, not intoxicated. And you know, he should be investigated in this.”
On Tuesday, it was revealed that some new family members of Wood had brought the long-running mystery to the attention of Los Angeles prosecutors who are scheduled to discuss the case further later this week. Wood was in a relationship with her co-star, actor Christopher Walken, at the time of her death.
