With nearly 100 million people attending the US’s 92nd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles this week, the annual American Music Awards don’t have quite the same feel.
The music industry’s biggest night still offers big awards and big performers. But it doesn’t have quite the weight as the Grammys.
Here are some of the more memorable looks from the 22nd Annual AMAs:

Keen to stand out, artists either chose outfits or talked about their outfits on social media. The emphasis was on a bit of edge in spite of all the winter chill.

Some of the red carpet hair and make-up pieces were also interesting.

Big name female nominees including Pink, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna opted for more bold colourful looks. But the most memorable look of the night went to Mariah Carey , who was kind of channelling an astronaut , anyway.

First Rihanna, now Mariah Carey… eh?! But they might as well have both come wearing a playpen on their head.
Other great outfits included Ariana Grande in a quirky designer ensemble. Thankfully, there was no drama between her and her feuding pop star ex-boyfriend Mac Miller .

Also in the mix was Tracee Ellis Ross in an otherwise neutrally printed peach dress , even if she did sport a huge afro. And Janelle Monae and Dua Lipa chose understated colours, but a retro vibe .

Babyblue singer Lorde earned the award for the night’s most exciting look , and maybe deserved it.

The singer wore her hair styled in a 90s inspired bouffant and wore a dress and jewellery inspired by her pile of clothes on her bedside table. Very fashion savvy .

But in the end it was chart-topping rapper Travis Scott in what turned out to be the most daring outfit. He added a coat in pure white for a festive look.

All in all, the shows won the fashion game , but I was saved by Janelle Monae’s sparkly catsuit and Rita Ora’s fun-loving red lip.
